Small Business Owners Share 2017 Hiring Strategies

Small Business Owners Share 2017 Hiring StrategiesSmall Business Owners Share 2017 Hiring StrategiesSmall Business Owners Share 2017 Hiring Strategies RossheimWhat lies ahead forsmall business 2017 hiring strategies? The New Yearposes a variety of uncertainties, from revenue growth to changes in the economic and regulatory environment that could come with a new president and Congress. In response, some companies are taking a variety of approaches to hiring for the New Year.We spoke with a handful of sources who offered their thoughts on 2017 hiring strategies.Despite optimism, companies are hesitant to hire. Some small businesses are taking a cautious approach to hiring in 2017, even if healthy growth continues. Only 22 percent of companies expect to add employees, similar to 24 percent in the spring of 2016, says the October 2016 PNC Financial Services Group surveyof small and middle-market business owners. When asked why, 28 percent of respondents planning not to hire say they will instead ask more of their employees. While that may be a workable strategy for near-term payroll savings, it may backfire in the long run as companies look to retain high potential employees.Still, 71 percent of these business owners are optimistic about the economy, the most in PNCs fall survey since 2005. This disparity may reconcile itself as the year progresses. The postings will be there, but qualified candidates often wont. In its September 2016 report, the National Federation of Independent Business found that a seasonally adjusted net 10 percent of businesses plan to create new jobs in the coming months. But nearly a quarter of businesses said they could not fill current openings due to a lack of qualified candidates.Small businesses time their talent acquisition with care. In 2017, many firms hiring strategies include the tactic of putting off for as long as possible the upfront expense and ongoing payroll cost of hiring. Our technology is built, so we can wait until we sign d eals to bring on more talent, says Jana Eggers, CEO of Nara Logics, which applies artificial intelligence to data science. We do big enterprise sales with long lead times. Were starting to gear up this year for deals Im planning on closing next year.As of October, Nara Logics had 11 employees and two posted jobs, and is likely to add five more positions in the first half of 2017, in technical, marketing and sales positions, Eggers says.Solid metrics yield better workforce plans. Small businesses increasingly are finding that a disciplined approach to metrics yields the most effective workforce planning. Weve kept clean, consistent metrics about clients, and how much talent it takes to serve them, says Andrew Hsu, managing partner. Spotlight Analyst Relations had 16 employees in October, and was planning to staff up to 27 or 28 by year-end 2017, he says.Professional services firms hire up as business only gets more complex. Theres great demand for services from new clients and additi onal demand from existing clients, says Alan Badey, a managing partner at accounting, tax and consulting firm Citrin Cooperman , a trend that will create demand for talent in companies of all sizes.Regulation and trends such as increased concerns about cybersecurity will continue to create an environment for businesses where they need assistance from outside experts, Badey says. Citrin Cooperman has about 850 employees If we hit our growth plans, well probably need 50 to 75 people in 2017.A strong dollar motivates firms to look at hiring abroad. Many small firms looking to expand internationally may give the notion a green light in 2017.Most companies are going ahead and hiring, and the dollar is so strong that companies want to take advantage of sales opportunities, says Nicole Sahin, CEO of Globalization Partners, a professional employer organization that helps companies bring on their first workers in other countries. So with Brexit, theyre in research mode, trying to figure out which countries to go into.Globalization Partners headcount is currently under 50, but we expect to expand to 70 next year, says Sahin. When your clients expect results in a hurry. Like many small companies, clients of Globalization Partners expect the high-touch firm to turn on a dime. A small business owner typically wants to hire abroad on short notice, so her company must have the manpower to move quickly, Sahin says. This is why Sahin believes its critical to maintain an active recruitment pipeline at all times.Brexit raises questions about how to expand internationally. Uncertainties over the future of Europe will complicate hiring for small firms in 2017. Some companies are considering Brexit, says Sahin.Nobody knows how Brexit will go. But often if an American company hires their first person in Europe, theyve often done it in the UK. Instead, says Sahin, theyre now looking at Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland.

How to Discuss Your Job Search With Your Family

How to Discuss Your Job Search With Your FamilyHow to Discuss Your Job Search With Your FamilyYour job search will affect your entire family. Heres how to talk to them about it.Ill never forget the day my father told me he lost his job. I welches nine years old, and he was taking me around the neighborhood to sell Girl Scout cookies. He told me that he left his company and was looking for a new position. At the time I remember feeling scared because I knew my dad was the sole provider for our family. But I was more worried about how this news might affect the family vacation plans and weekly trips to McDonalds. I wasnt thinking about the stress my father must have been under, or how difficult it was to come home and explain to his wife and children that hed just lost his job.Whether youve been fired from a job or left voluntarily, the prospect of starting a job hunt can be incredibly stressful, and this is especially true when you have a family to support. Here are three tips to help you discuss your job search with your family.Be honest about the situation.Youre not doing anyone any favors by hiding the truth from your family. Address your unemployment head-on.Dr. Laurence J. Stybel, a trained licensed psychologist and co-founder of career management firm Stybel Peabody Lincolnshire, says that children between the ages of 8 and 15 are incredibly self-focused yet very sensitive to their parents stress levels.Attempts to protect the children by saying everything is ok only leads to more stress, as parents try to cover up their tension in front of children, said Stybel.Instead, Stybel suggests telling your kids that Mom or Dad is looking for a new job, acknowledging that there may be some stress along the way, but assuring them that everyone will be ok. This way, if your child senses tension, they wont accidentally draw the wrong conclusion and blame themselves for your stress.Tailor your message. Not every member of the family requires the same amount of informat ion throughout the process. While being completely open and honest with your spouse will help them support you through this difficult time, Carina Chivulescu, an HR professional with The Expert Institute, suggests communicating only positive progress to your children during the job hunt, such as landing an interview.Having a parent who is unemployed may make them nervous about the situation, Chivulescu said. Your kids dont need to know about every setback and difficulty you experience throughout the entire job-search process.Make it a family affair. Chances are, you may be spending more time at home than before as you search for your next job. Treat your job hunt as a full-time job and block off time each day thats dedicated to your search. This way, your family knows when youre available to chat and when you are working from home. Also, set aside time for the family each day. Tammi Van Hollander, a child play therapist at Main Line Therapy, recommends scheduling family dinners as muc h as possible.Theyre a great way to connect with the family and check in about everyones day, said Van Hollander. If your kids ask how they can help, consider doling out some of the household chores, such as washing the dishes after dinner or taking out the trash. The job search is sure to have its ups and downs, but knowing what to tell your children and when will help make the process smoother for everyone involved.

Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable Tires

Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable Tires Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable Tires Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable TiresYour car runs on fossil fuels in more ways than one. Yes, you fill it up with gas to get you from here to there, but the tires on which the vehicle rolls are made predominantly from fossil fuels. But future tires neednt be true environmentallyunfriendly, say researchers from the University of Minnesotas departments of chemical and materials engineering and the University of Massachusetts at Amhersts chemical engineering department. That team has come up with a way to make automobile tires from organic matter, including trees, grasses, and corn. The process just might shift the tire production industry toward the use of renewable resources, says Paul Dauenhauer, a University of Minnesota associate professor of chemical engineering and materialsscience. This research could have a big impact on the multi-billion dollar automobile tires industry, says Dauenhauer, who led the research.B ut it neednt disrupt automotive producers and car drivers. The sustainably made tires would be able to fit existing and future automotiveaxles the same way current tires do. In other words, vehicle owners would mucksmuschenstill head to the tire store or automotive dealership to have new tires mounted. In fact, drivers probably wouldnt even notice between conventionally produced and so-called green tires. The biomass-produced car tires would be identical to existing car tires, with the same chemical makeup, color (they wouldnt really be green), shape and performance expectations, Dauenhauer says.Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived chemicals to renewable polymers occurs in laboratory stirred-tank reactors. Image University of MinnesotaThe method could also have an effect on the way other rubber-based products are made. Perhaps they too could be more sustainably produced using the same or similar process, he adds. The key to the whole tire-production processwhether biomass or tradit ionally producedis isoprene, the key molecule in car tires. The researchers wanted to find a way to produce it from the natural products found in many peoples backyards. For decades, tires companies have been looking for ways to produce isoprene from organic matter, Dauenhauer says.Today, chemists make isoprene by breaking petroleum molecules via a thermally driven process known as cracking. The isoprene is then separated from the hundreds of other chemicals produced by cracking and purified. Finally, chemical engineers cause the isoprene to react with itself. This results in the long chains that make up a solid polymer. That solid is the major component of car tires.Researchers believed there had to be a better way. Interest in finding one has risen in tandem with the increase in environmental consciousness. But most of those production efforts have been focused on fermentation, Dauenhauer says. That made sense, as Ethanol, a clean-energy-burning engine fuel and fuel additive, can be produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeasts. It can, for example, be produced from sugar cane. But isoprene proved a difficult molecule to generate from the microbes that resulted from fermentation. And efforts to make it by processes that didnt include fermentation havent succeeded, Dauenhauer says. Then, the Minnesota and Massachusetts researchers discovered a three-step process that combines biological fermentation with conventional catalytic refiningsimilar to the way petroleum is refinedcan work to create isoprene, he adds. The new process begins with sugars derived from the organic matter. In the first step, the sugars derived from the grasses, corn, and other matter are fermented to form whats called an intermediate, in this case itaconic acid.In the second step, itaconic acid and hydrogen are combined to form a chemical called methyl-THF (tetrahydrofuran). The third step is where the breakthrough occurs. In that step, methyl-THF is dehydrated to form isoprene. Using a cata lyst recently discovered at the University of Minnesota, called P-SPP (Phosphorus Self-Pillared Pentasil), the team was able boost the reaction by up to 90 percent. Isoprene made up most of the resulting product.S-PPP surprised researchers with its ability to dramatically boost catalytic efficiency, Dauenhauer says. They had expected positive results, but not the 90 percent boost.Manufacturers could one day have that three-step process to thank for boosting U.S. tire production, says Frank Bates, a University of Minnesota professor of chemical engineering and materials science.Economically, biosourced isoprene could expand domestic production of car tires by using renewable, readily available resources instead of fossil fuels, Bates says.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Economically, bio-sourced isoprene could expand domestic production of car tires by using renewable, readily available resources instead of fossil fuels. This Is How You Add Personality To Your Hiring Process

This Is How You Add Personality To Your Hiring ProcessWhether you realize it or not, your company has a personality all its own. Your employees, values, and company culture all contribute to what makes your organization special. But does your hiring process let that uniqueness shine through?A 2015 LinkedIn survey found that 83 percent of job seekers would change their mind about a company after having a bad interview experience. If your hiring process doesnt accurately reflect how great your company is, youll miss out on talent. However, it can be difficult to make boring job descriptions, career webpages, and interview questions more interesting. Here are four tips from hiring experts thatll help you add a bit of personality to your hiring process1. Get creative with job descriptionsThere are several ways a company can incorporate its culture into the hiring process, and it starts from the way they write and advertise their job description. Instead of listing a yawn-inducing set of j ob requirements and skill sets, organizations need to introduce the key elements of their culture whether that be high energy, team oriented, or philanthropic into the job description under a You and We section. The You section describes the attributes of the ideal candidate, which are linked to the organizations cultural values, such as you appreciate a good debate, even with your boss, you love to work in jeans, or you love volunteering on weekends. The We section describes the cultural values the organization embraces, such as we work to protect the environment or we care more about your intelligence and values than your experience. This approach not only ensures organizations are attracting the right schriftart of person for the position, but also filters out candidates who would not be a long-term fit for the company.Keith Johnstone, Marketing Manager, Peak Sales RecruitingCreative job descriptions add personality to the hiring process. The hiring process is a candidates first exposure to a company, so its imperative that we project a unique and clear employer brand and culture through every step of the process. With the rise of sites like Glassdoor and the Muse, transparency in the job market is at an all-time high, and one bad candidate experience can reach the eyes of thousands of job seekers, negatively impacting your employer brand. Conversely, candidates who have a great experience can easily spread the word as well Our first line of defense to showcase our culture is through our job descriptions. Were in the process of revamping them to focus more on deliverables and what a candidate can expect at specific touch points during their first year with us, which is very Outbrainy and reflective of our culture. We also encourage the team to think about the most successful person on their team, and what qualities contribute t o that. Together with our company values, thats what were evaluating in prospective candidates and hoping to project through the process.Claire Maikowski, Head of Talent Acquisition, OutbrainThe hiring process introduces job seekers to a company. Let candidates meet the teamIt is important to have a hiring process that has more personality because it appeals to millennials, in particular. Many millennials are spending more and more time at work and would like to be around people who have great personalities. An organization can incorporate the companys culture by having same-level employees talk to prospective employees, rather than the manager. This allows the new employee to understand how the geschftlicher umgang works and be able to form a camaraderie with the future co-workers. A business can also improve the hiring process by allowing a tour of the company, as well as having paid lunches with the future co-workers. This a llows a job seeker to understand the business and actually enjoy the experience.AJ Saleem, Academic Director, Suprex Private TutoringLet candidates talk to future co-workers to let them get to know companyculture SuprexLearningClick To Tweet4. Make the process engagingIts important to have personality in the hiring process because candidates are bombarded with routine, monotonous application processes. Recent research even points out that candidates dont mind the length of the hiring process but prefer a high level of engagement. When you stand out to job seekers, you win not only a future hire, but you also win potential new customers and brand advocates. The one thing you can do to stop the spreading of fake news

The one thing you can do to stop the spreading of fake nachrichtensendungThe one thing you can do to stop the spreading of fake newsA human year equates to seven dog years.A mans maternal grandfather determines whether he will go bald.Dietary cholesterol raises blood cholesterol. We use only 10% of our brains. These statements are all false. The dog-to-human age ratio has been repeated since the thirteenth century, with zero scientific basis. The gene for baldnesscan be inheritedfrom either side of your family. Eating cholesterol, as Dr. Peter Attiaexplains, has very little impact on the cholesterol levels in your body. And the 10% figure about the brain is so wrong it is almost laughable, explainsneurologist Barry Gordon. Over the course of a day, we use 100% of our brains. These are all facts- not opinions. Yet the misconceptions surrounding them have persisted for decades, for a simple reason Weve been repeating them over and over. This principle of repetition has been the key to fueli ng toxic political propaganda over the centuries. A lie told once remains a lie, but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth, explained Joseph Goebbels, the mastermind behind the Nazi propaganda machine. Adolf Hitler agreed The most brilliant straenverkufer technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.Repetition has become even easier with social media. Myths, once reported and retweeted, become the truth. When we see a piece of false information, our instinct is to correct it. But in repeating fake news in an attempt to dispel it, we end up unwittingly spreading the virus. People remember the myths rather than the opposing arguments.Consider the myth regarding the link between autism and the MMR vaccine. Inone study, researchers sent more than 1,700 parents one of four campaigns intended to increase MMR vaccination rates. The campaigns, which were adopted nearl y verbatim from those used by federal agencies in the United States, ranged from textual information refuting the vaccine-autism link to graphic images of children who had developed diseases that could have been prevented by the vaccine. The studys goal was to determine which campaign would be the most effective in overcoming parents reluctance to vaccinate their children.None of the campaigns worked. For parents with the least favorable attitude toward vaccines, the campaigns actually backfired and made the parentslesslikely to vaccinate their children. The fear appeal campaign- bearing tragic images of children suffering from measles - paradoxicallyincreasedalready hesitant parents belief that the MMR vaccine causes autism. So resist the urge to hit that retweet button. Dont take the bait. Stop repeating false facts (as I did at the beginning of this post) or reposting that latest quip from your favorite demagogue.Fake news wont disappear. But at least we can drain it of the oxygen of repetition it needs to thrive.Inspirations for the postAnnie Duke, Thinking in Bets Making Smarter Decisions When You Dont Have All the Factsand Tali Sharot,The Influential Mind What the Brain Reveals About Our Power to Change Others.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. You must meet one-on-one with a new hire in the first week

You must meet one-on-one with a new hire in the first weekYou must meet one-on-one with a new hire in the first weekWhen you get hired, your first week will set the tone for what happens next, according to a new survey conducted at Microsoft and highlighted by Harvard Business Review. The researchers noticed that what retained new hires at the tech giant came down to a simple action - did their manager meet with them one-on-one that first week? That meeting made the difference between a new hire seeing themselves at the company for years, or as a layover, before they flew away for greener pastures.Meet with your new hire in the first week to help them stay engaged in the long-runLooking over the early behavior of 3,000 new hires, the researchers found that new hires will forgive the tedious parts of on-boarding. They held no ill will towards not having an identification card immediately or needing to set up that computer equipment. Those were first impressions that they could let go. But their manager meeting with them one-on-one left a lasting impression on their engagement and productivity. Those who honigwein with their manager to talk about goals reported a higher sense of belonging. They were three times more likely to collaborate with their team. They developed a 12% larger internal network within the first 90 days at the company and became more likely to stay.New employees can begin to formulate impressions about organizations from the get-go, influencing their decision to stay with the company in the long term, the researchers write. Dont underestimate the powerof having a one-on-one during a parties first week. That sounds obvious, but it could be the most important connection for the new employee to make.As soon as we enter our new jobs, we begin to make judgments about our coworkers and workplace. How to Become a Professional Salesperson

How to Become a Professional Salesperson How to Become a Professional Salesperson Not all salespeople are professionals. Being a professional implies a certain level of ability that not everyone can claim, combined with a certain attitude and behavior. On the other hand, being a professional has little to do with what you actually sell or who you sell it to. Here are some of the attributes that professional salespeople share. Integrity Integrity is an important quality for professionals in any field, but for salespeople, its even more important. Because salespeople have an unfortunate reputation for shady and unethical behavior, a professional salesperson must not allow even a hint of such behavior. Even the smallest bending of his ethics will confirm others in their belief of the stereotypical snake oil salesperson. Instead, professional salespeople always put their customers needs first. They dont try to trick or push prospects into buying something thats not the best choice for them. Instead, they work with prospects to find the best possible solution for their needs, even if that means sending them to a competitor. Pride in Your Job Its not uncommon for salespeople to hide what they do behind titles such as account executives, customer reps, product specialists, and so on. Professional salespeople are proud to be in sales. They know that the job they do supports both their employers and their customers. Salespeople serve others just as doctors or teachers or even firefighters do, and professional salespeople know that. Salespeople talk to dozens or even hundreds of other people every day. Professional salespeople know that they can make each and every one of these contacts a positive experience for the other person, taking the opportunity to make things a little better for everyone they interact with. Salespeople who are professionals also know that they are the faces of the companies they represent, and they act accordingly. Continual Self-Improvement Professionals in many fields are required to keep learning and training no matter how experienced they get. Doctors, lawyers, and accountants, just to name a few, all have continuing education requirements to keep their certifications. Salespeople who are professionals realize its just important for them to keep learning and growing, even though theres no rule specifically requiring it. Many companies are aware of this need and well regularly send their salespeople to classes or provide them with training material. However, professional salespeople who work for companies that dont provide such opportunities will get training on their initiative. Professional salespeople also keep trying out new things, whether its a sales channel they never used before, a new cold calling script, or a different approach to closing. Liking What You Do Some salespeople hate their jobs. They keep on doing sales because it pays the rent, but theyre miserable and they do only the absolute minimum they have to  keep their jobs. Professional salespeople, on the other hand, enjoy being in sales. They probably dont love every single aspect of the job, but they do like the overall day-to-day business of being in sales. Finding new prospects and convincing them to buy is exciting and fun; they thrive on the challenges inherent to being in sales. One caveat to keep in mind is that new salespeople often dont enjoy the job at first, just because its overwhelming to learn all at once. That doesnt mean that youre doomed to hate sales forever, it just means that you need some time to get used to the job and its tasks. However, if youve been in sales for a while and you still hate it, its time to start thinking about a change of careers. Why should you make yourself miserable doing something you hate for the rest of your life?

Prince Harry will reportedly take 2 weeks of paternity leave and research shows why thats so important

Prince Harry will reportedly take 2 weeks of paternity leave and research shows why that's so important Prince Harry will reportedly take 2 weeks of paternity leave and research shows why that's so important Prince Harry will reportedly  take two weeks  of paternity leave when his wife, Meghan Markle, gives birth.A friend of the Prince is reported to have said, “He doesn’t need to take paternity leave because he doesn’t work in the way most people do, but he thinks it’s a very modern dad thing to do.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The news about the royal family serves as a reminder of how difficult it can be when paid family leave isn’t an option. Becoming a new parent is a huge undertaking, and  the situation becomes infinitely more challenging  for parents forced to take unpaid family leave. What’s perhaps most frustrating is the abundance of research that often goes ignored. These studies illustrate how beneficial paid parental leave can be not just for parents, but also for children, society, and companies, too.Luckily for some, a few companies have taken not e. At Netflix, for example,  new moms and dads  can take off as much time as they want during the first year after their child’s birth or adoption. But while extended paid leave for new parents is a  hot trend  for  major tech giants, only 35% and 29% of companies offered some paid maternity and paternity leave, respectively, in 2018, according to the  Society for Human Resource Management.Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993, qualifying American parents are guaranteed 12 weeks of family leave to care for a new child. While the law requires companies with 50 or more employees to provide new parents with 12 weeks of leave, it doesn’t require this leave to be paid. In fact, the US is the  only country  in the developed world that doesn’t mandate paid maternity leave. This policy  is also restricted to full-time employees who have been with the company for more than a year, which, all told, applies to about 60% of workers in the US.The US Department of Agriculture   finds that parents spend, on average, between $12,350 and $13,900 a year on child-rearing expenses. And big-ticket items like furniture and medical expenses add up quickly. Without the guarantee of paid leave while caring for a child, many new parents are faced with the choice between economic hardship and returning to work prematurely.People who don’t get paid leave often have a hard time making ends meetAccording to a  2012 report from the US Department of Labor on family and medical leave, about 15% of people who were not paid or who received partial pay while on leave turned to public assistance for help. About 60% of workers who took this leave reported it was difficult making ends meet, and almost half reported they would have taken longer leave if more pay had been available.“Support for motherhood shouldn’t be a matter of luck; it should be a matter of course,” YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki wrote in  an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal. “Paid maternity leave is good for mothers, families and business. America should have the good sense to join nearly every other country in providing it.”Wojcicki reported the rate at which new moms left Google fell by 50% when in 2007, the tech giant increased paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 18 weeks. “Mothers were able to take the time they needed to bond with their babies and return to their jobs feeling confident and ready. And it’s much better for Google’s bottom line - to avoid a costly turnover, and to retain the valued expertise, skills, and perspective of our employees who are mothers.”In 2004, California became the first state to implement a paid-family-leave policy that enabled most working Californians to receive 55% of their usual salary (up to $1,104) for a maximum of six weeks.Since then, only New Jersey and Rhode Island have actualized similar programs. (Starting in 2020, Washington state will require employers to provide some paid parental leave.)Paid family leave may benefit bus inessesAccording to a  report from the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, more than 90% of employers affected by California’s paid family-leave initiative reported either positive or no noticeable effect on profitability, turnover, and morale.Another  study, from the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University,  found that women who took advantage of New Jersey’s paid-family-leave policy were far more likely to be working nine to 12 months after the birth of their child. The study also found these women to be 39% less likely to receive public assistance and 40% less likely to receive food stamps in the year following a child’s birth, compared to those who didn’t take any leave.A study of European leave policies by the University of North Carolina  found that paid-leave programs can substantially reduce infant mortality rates and better a child’s overall health. And  research out of The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn  indicates higher education, IQ, and income levels in adulthood for children of mothers who used maternity leave - the biggest effect comes for children from lower-educated households. The researchers cited this as a significant discussion for policymakers to have, as it could reduce the existing gap in education and income in the US.Paid paternity leave is important, in addition to paid maternity leaveThere’s plenty of evidence that supports the effectiveness of paid paternity leave, too.A  study by Boston College’s Center for Work Family  found that 86% of men surveyed said they wouldn’t use paternity leave or parental leave unless they were paid at least 70% of their normal salaries. But  research out of Israel  shows the more leave men take to care for children when they’re young, the more the fathers undergo  changes in the brain  that make them better suited to parenting. And a  study by two Columbia University Social Work professors  found that fathers who take two or more weeks off after their child is born are more involved in their child’s care nine months later. Simply put, paid paternity leave can help foster better father-child relationships. And the more leave fathers take, the more mothers’ incomes increase. In Sweden, where fathers must take at least two months off before the child is 8 years old to receive government benefits, researchers saw  mothers’ incomes increase almost 7% for every month of paternity leave their husbands took.As  President Barack Obama once said during a weekly addresses, “Family leave, childcare, flexibility - these aren’t frills. They’re basic needs. They shouldn’t be bonuses - they should be the bottom line.”This article first appeared on Business Insider. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Eating this can boost brain function, prevent cognitive decline

Eating this can boost brain function, prevent cognitive decline Eating this can boost brain function, prevent cognitive decline Seniors can keep their brain boosted well into their golden years if they develop a love for mushrooms. Seniors who eat two servings a week of the fungus may be half as likely to develop mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Those are the findings of a study from the Department of Psychological Medicine and Department of Biochemistry and the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in Singapore, recently published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.“This correlation is surprising and encouraging. It seems that a commonly available single ingredient could have a dramatic effect on cognitive decline,” said Assistant Professor Feng Lei, who is from  NUS  Psychological Medicine, and the lead author.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!MCI is the stage between the normal cognitive decline of aging and the more serious decline of dementia, a state where memory and mental function has s lipped, but one still able to get on with day-to-day activities. When it comes to eating the fungus, one serving means 3/4 of a cup of mushrooms, cooked. Still, the findings showed that even one small amount of mushrooms per week could still benefit in reducing the chances of developing MCI.The study examined over 600 Chinese senior citizens over 60 living in Singapore from 2011-17.Mushroom tripSix different mushrooms, all commonly eaten in Singapore, were used in the study. They included shiitake and white button mushrooms, dried mushrooms, and canned mushrooms. It’s likely that other mushrooms outside those six would also have beneficial effects too. It’s the compound found in almost all varieties of mushrooms that the researchers believe to be the magic bullet that helps prevent MCI.“We’re very interested in a compound called ergothioneine (ET),” said Dr. Irwin Cheah, Senior Research Fellow from  NUS Biochemistry. “ET is a unique antioxidant and anti-inflammatory which humans are unable to synthesize on their own. But it can be obtained from dietary sources, one of the main ones being mushrooms.”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Defining Your Professional Brand and Moving Your Career Forward

Defining Your Professional Brand and Moving Your Career Forward Defining Your Professional Brand and Moving Your Career Forward Defining Your Professional Brand and Moving Your Career Forward Ready for the next chapter in your career but don't know where to start? Here's what you need to know. [TWEET] For many of us, we finish school (high school, college, or graduate school) and take a job. Ideally it is in our field, but for a great number of us, it is not. That BA in History only goes so far if you're not looking to teach, but collaboration, research skills, and an overall work ethic are still valued and suddenly you find yourself in a sales role. Now, it's been eight years in sales positions, and you are ready to move forward. Whatever the goal, you need to move forward in your career and you don't have a clue how to start. The first step: determine your goal. Are you changing fields? Would you simply like more money or new responsibilities? Do you want to apply your developed skills in a new way? Is your current role holding you to a tough travel schedule and you would prefer some permanence? By defining your goals, you can begin crafting your professional brand and identifying positions that are in need of someone with your background. Secondly: create a checklist of skills. What can you offer a new company or offer your current organization in a different way? This is where you are going to be innovative. Rather than focusing on the defined skills of your current position, consider how those skills could be adapted. As a sales professional, you may have a strong background in building relationships. Perhaps you have led teams or facilitated training seminars. You may have conducted some market research to determine new territories or leads. All of this is relevant to your current field, but can be adapted to show your value in a new industry as well. Training experience would be applicable in an HR or education role, or even in any management position. Market research and analysis demonstrate critical thinking, and relationship building shows personality and people skills. The third step: link those skills to your goal. By doing this, you are able to identify clearly for your target-hiring manager what you offer. Just because the job posting suggests they want three years of HR experience, don't write it off. The question is can you translate sales experience into HR skills? Finally: approach your target with this information. If you are seeking a promotion, you may present this to your boss as an outline of the value you offer your company and demonstrate why you should be considered for the next step. If you want a raise, this information can help you to speak to the additional skills they would need to find in a new candidate if you were to leave, again strengthening your argument that you deserve to be paid more. If you are changing fields, you now have a preliminary cover letter developed by showing how you can apply your background to a new position or experience. And if you are simply focusing on creating a brand for yourself, streamlining your background into something meaningful and easily represented on LinkedIn or social media, you have created a brand message and career summary. Now you are able to walk into an interview with eight years of sales experience and explain why you are perfect for that Marketing Manager or Recruiter position. You have made your skills universal and you have answers for people who may need help seeing beyond the job description.

Dont Be the Desperate Job Seeker

Don't Be the Desperate Job Seeker Don't Be the Desperate Job Seeker You don’t have to take this job. You have options. We’ve heard the comparison a thousand times: A job search is very much like the dating game. You never want to look desperate. You don’t want to come across as having low standards. You don’t want to come across as though you would go out with just anyone. You want to exude calm confidence. You want to come across as being genuinely interested in getting to know the other person but not ready to launch into a relationship until you get to know him or her better. You want to appear desirable and desired.Five ways to be desirableNo matter how badly you want a particular job, don’t think of it as a life-or-death situation. Consider it being open to going on a date with the other person. With that analogy in mind, here are five ideas on which to focus.1. Keep your options openWould you date someone if you were the only person interested in her? I doubt it. People want to go out with someone who is intriguing and who they feel they have to put in some effort to date.To put yourself in such a position, write down all of the options you have for the next six months: If you’re currently employed, you can stay in your job. You can go back to school and work on an advanced degree. You can start your own business. You can work for a former competitor. You can write the book you’ve always put off. You can volunteer for a worthy not-for-profit agency. The key is to know you always have options. When you feel you don’t have options, you will come across as being desperate for any opportunity.2. Recall past successesWrite down five of your past success stories. Answer these five questions for each job: What was my goal? What obstacles did I have to overcome to achieve the goal? How did I persevere through those obstacles? What did it feel like when I achieved the goal? What lessons did I learn from that experience that I can use in my next job? Be familiar with your past successes. You may be able subtly to inject them into a conversation with a decision-maker about the job you want.3. RelaxDating success or failure often comes down to non-verbal communication. A nervous laugh, talking excessively, or saying “I’m sorry” every 90 seconds can signal that you are unsure of yourself.Calmly listening sends the message that you are confident in yourself and you don’t have to fill up all the available quiet moments with endless chatter.4. PatienceDemonstrating patience in the job search shows that you are in a position of strength and that you don’t have to accept anything immediately. By moving the process along patiently, you may very well motivate the other person to work harder. If you pressure the person to make a decision today, you may turn him away from you.5. Be fun to be aroundAs a job candidate, be the type of person other people will want to work with. I’m not talking about having a beer or a glass of wine with the interviewer. I am talking about being willing to hear about the other person’s day. Relax, smile and be patient. These are very difficult and intense economic times. If you are not careful, you will walk into an interview situation with stress written all over your face.Instead, walk in with the attitude that you are merely looking forward to meeting a new friend. Be confident, calm, relaxed and ready to explore the possibility of moving to the next level in your relationship.Take it slow, have fun and know you’re in a position of strength because you don’t have to take this job. You have options. You have confidence. You have past successes. And you know you will be patient until you get the opportunity you are looking for.
